Order of the Patriotic War 1st class #110199

 

Awarded posthumously to Sr. Lieutenant Nikolay Yakovlevich Shokol (Николай Яковлевич Шокол)

 

For inspiring his men by personal example during the battle near Olszewo-Przyborowo on 15 August 1944, where he rushed into enemy trenches and attacked the Germans with hand grenades, continuing to fight despite being twice wounded, and contributing decisively to the successful capture of enemy positions

 

Shokol died as a result of his wounds 10 days later

 

 

Made of solid gold, silver and enamels. Measures 45.07 mm in height, 43.87 mm in width and it weighs 30.6 grams without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark Monetni Dvor at the 12 o’clock position of its reverse.

 

In great condition with its details sharp and well-defined, with minimal wear even on raised elements like the hammer and sickle. The red and white enamels are vibrant and intact, showing only a few minor dings and no repair. The order comes with its original silver screwplate which fits perfectly well.

 

Scarce and sought-after posthumous award to a brave man!

 

Brief description of his feat of arms or achievements:

Working as a deputy battalion commander for political work, he conducted extensive political work among the personnel. Hie inspired the men for heroic feats by personal example. Intensive fighting was ongoing near the settlement Olszewo-Przyborowo. The enemy was counter-attacking. On 15 August 1944, after initial artillery barrage, he was the first to raise for an attack inspiring his men to follow him into assault on the enemy defences. He was wounded at this moment, but remained on the battlefield. Having flanked the enemy, he rushed into enemy trenches and attacked the Germans with hand-grenades. He was wounded for the second time, but continued engaging the enemy until after the enemy caved in under our thrust and began retreating. The combat objective was achieved.

He deserves order “PATRIOTIC WAR I CLASS”.

Died of wounds 25.08.1944.
Initial burial place in Gunie-Ostrów. Later relocated to a burial site in Ostrołęka.
