Rare piece with a separate screwpost base

 

Awarded to Lieutenant Georgy Dmitrievich Mikhailenko (Георгий Дмитриевич Михайленко)

 

For repelling enemy armour and infantry attacks, taking out 2 enemy tanks and stopping the enemy infantry advance

 

Made of silver and enamels. The order measures 47.58 mm in width, 46.88 mm in height and weighs 26.9 gram without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark on the 12 o’clock position of its reverse. This variation has a separate round base ‘heel’ of the screw and is extremely uncommon for this serial number range and only a dozen or so specimens are known.

This piece is in an excellent, above average condition. Its details are mostly present and the higher laying parts on the soldier show medium wear. The enamels are beautiful without repairs and have relatively few contact marks. The reverse is in excellent condition too and shows an attractive dark patina. The screwpost is full length and the order comes with its time period silver screwplate.

 

Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits

The artillery platoon commander Lieutenant MIKHAILENKO G.D. exhibited his military skill in being capable of destroying the enemy troops and equipment from a short distance in the engagement near the village Vyshevychi on 08 December 1943. Exhibiting resourcefulness and initiative, he masterfully led his troops and repelled enemy armour and infantry attacks. Allowing the enemy armour to a 200-300 meters distance, his guns opened fire from an open sights positions, taking out 2 enemy tanks and stopping the enemy infantry advance. This allowed the artillery battery to move to the new firing position without any losses. In the difficult circumstances of the meeting engagement, Lieutenant MIKHAILENKO delivered exemplary command of his unit and revealed an example of courageous and brave conduct.
