Order of the Red Star #298737

Awarded to T-34 Tank Commander Junior Lieutenant Grigory Afanasyevich Volkov (Григорий Афанасьевич Волков)

For maintaining vital communications from a T-34 tank during the brigade’s September–October 1943 offensive, keeping links active under heavy fire, and personally delivering reports from staff to the front line

Lt. Volkov disappeared during combat a few months later in December 1943

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 49.29 mm in width, 47.15 mm in height and weighs 26.6 grams without its screwplate. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post.

This order is in superb, well above average condition with crisp details. The stunning enamels are extremely well preserved without repairs and or scratches and the silver shows an appealing medium dark patina on both sides. Its screw has not been shortened and it comes with a correct and well fitted solid silver screwplate.

Hard to upgrade!

Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits:

During the brigade’s offensive operations in September – October 1943, the communications officer Junior Lieutenant Valov operated together with the tank battalion engaged in combat. In the area of Sharovka, under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, when the tank battalion was fighting stubborn battles, he continuously maintained communications at the command post and personally delivered information from the battalion staff directly to the front line.
Deserving of a government award – the Order of the Red Star.
