Order of the Red Star #2262487 with booklet

Awarded to Lieutenant Evgeniy Mikhaylovich Merets (Евгений Михайлович Мерец)

 

For courageous and decisive leadership during the offensive on the Samland Peninsula, personally demonstrating bravery by leading his squad in the assault on Norgau on April 4, 1945, where his company killed 40 and captured 36 enemy soldiers, and he personally eliminated 9 Germans with machine-gun fire and grenades

 

 

Made of silver and enamels by the Moscow Platinpribor Factory (MZPP). Measures 48.14 mm in width, 46.28 mm in height and weighs 31.6 gram without its screwplate. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post.

In nice overall condition with several dings and scratches to the center medallion but most details still visible. The enamels are well preserved without repairs and some contact marks only. Its screwplate is time period to the order and the screw has not been shortened.

The order comes with its award booklet which is in good vintage condition with all pages present and firmly attached to the cover. This Order of the Red Star is mentioned together with an Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class which  is not present in this lot.

 

Brief translation of the citation:

During the offensive battles to eliminate the enemy group on the Samland Peninsula (Germany), northwest of Königsberg (East Prussia), Merets led his squad with courage and determination, setting a personal example of bravery and combat skill.

On April 4, 1945, his company was the first to storm the village of Norgau, where they killed 40 German soldiers and captured 36.

In this battle, Merets personally killed 9 German soldiers with machine-gun fire and grenades.

He deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Star.
