Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #611600

Awarded to the Jewish Captain Naum Naftulovich Ortenberg (Наум Нафтулович Ортенберг)

For service as military commissar of Hospital No. 1409, political officer in the Volkhov Front reserve, and deputy political commander of the 811th Rifle Regiment, where he was severely wounded in combat, resulting in the loss of his left leg

Scarce small ‘Fish Eye’ variation

Made of solid silver, gold and enamels. The order weighs 22.7 grams without its screwplate and measures 43.00 mm in width and 45.16 mm in height.

In well preserved condition with all details crisp and light overall wear. The red and white enamels are problem free without chipping or repairs and show some small dings and scratches only. Both sides show a medium patina to the silver and the order comes with its time period screwplate. Its screwpost has not been shortened and the gold hammer and sickle is original to the order.

“Fish Eye” variations, produced by the Leningrad Mint, are noticeably smaller than other wartime Orders of the Patriotic War, making the white ring with text appear larger. This relatively small variation is sought after by collectors for its very distinctive look and relative rarity. The lowest known number in this range of this variation is #580061 and the highest known number is #617896.
