Гуз Валентина Ивановна

Awarded to female Sergeant of the Medical Service Valentina Ivanovna Guz (Валентина Ивановна Гуз)

For exceptional valor and endurance as a frontline medical instructor and surgical nurse. Her accomplishments include rescuing wounded soldiers from the battlefield under enemy fire, personally donating her own blood and administering transfusions to roughly 80 severely wounded troops, and enduring up to two straight days at the operating table without sleep

This group consists of the following items:

Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #315487

Made of silver, gold and enamels. Measures 48.0 mm in height, 46.3 mm in width and weighs 24.4 grams without its screwplate.

This order is in excellent condition. The beautiful red and white enamels are problem free without repairs or chipping and show some dings only. The silver base has few dings or scratches on either side and has gathered an appealing patina. Its screw has not been shortened and the order comes with its original, well fitted screwplate.

Order of the Red Star #886905

Made of solid silver and enamels. Measures 50.1 mm in width, 47.8 in height and weighs 31.4 grams without its screwplate.

Medal for Combat Merit #243270

Made of solid silver and red lacquer. Measures 32.1 mm in diameter and 2.6 mm in thickness. The suspension measures 25.0 mm in width at its narrowest part and 31.3 at its widest point.

In about average condition considering it is an early wartime medal. Its details are still visible and crisp but the red lacquer filling the letters is worn off. Its silver suspension is original as is the brass screw, the nut, the plate holding the red ribbon and the screw plate tightening it all up. Its connection ring has not been cut.

Research to the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class:

In the past influx of wounded, Comrade Guz showed herself to be exceptionally hardworking and knowledgeable in her field.

Disregarding exhaustion, when she had to work for several days at a time without rest or sleep, she donated her own blood—500 grams at a time—to save the lives of the wounded.

She performed 151 dressings. She applied 100 splints to limbs. She administered anesthesia to severely wounded patients in 36 cases.

She assisted the physician-surgeon during major operations in 12 cases. During changes in deployment locations, she well-organized the evacuation of 60 treated wounded individuals to hospitals.

She is worthy of the government award: the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class.

Research to the Order of the Red Star:

Starshina of Medical Service Guz, Valentina Ivanovna, works as a surgical nurse. During the period of combat operations from the Mius River to the Dnieper River, while providing medical aid to wounded soldiers and officers, she demonstrated exceptional determination, initiative, and resourcefulness in organizing work.

She personally provided blood transfusions to approximately 80 severely wounded individuals, which completely ensured the survival of operations and saved lives. While frequently being part of an advanced group, it was not uncommon for Comrade Guz to remain at the operating table for two consecutive days without rest, ensuring the uninterrupted work of the surgeons, thereby contributing to the rapid provision of medical aid.

She is worthy of the government award: the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class.

Research to the Medal for Combat Merit:

Comrade V. I. Guz has proven herself in her work as a medical instructor; as a Communist [Party candidate], she has justified this high title.

More than once, Comrade Guz went out onto the battlefield under fire, pulled out the wounded, and delivered them from there to the medical battalion.

She also set an example in her care for wounded soldiers and commanders. Thanks to her care, the lives of many fighters were saved.

I petition to award Comrade Guz the Medal ‘For Combat Merit’.
