Medal for Bravery #1710245

 

Awarded to  Private Vasiliy Mikhailovich Merzlenko (Василий Михайлович Мерзленко)

 

Awarded for combat engagement on 02 February 1944 where he crawled towards enemy trenches attacking them with hand grenades, eliminated 3 German soldiers, and routed the rest. After the section commander was killed, Comrade Merzlenko assumed command and continued to pursue the retreating enemy

 

 

Made of solid silver. Measures 37.38 mm in diameter and 2.71 mm in thickness. The height of the medal is 42.64 mm (including the eyelet) and it weighs 28.0 grams without its suspension. 

In excellent condition with light overall wear on both sides. The details of the raised parts like the rivets on the side of the tank and the canons are extremely well preserved and all visible. The original lacquer filling the letters is mostly present with some small chips only. The medal comes with its time period suspension and old ribbon and its connection ring has not been cut.

 

Short translation of the research:

Rifleman of the 3rd rifle company private MERZLENKO Vasiliy Mikhailovich is bestowed for the combat engagement on 02 February 1944 for the hill “Bezimyannaya” (unnamed hill). Together with his section, he crawled towards the enemy trenches and attacked hem with hand grenades, eliminating 3 German soldiers and routing the rest of the German force. The section commander was killed in this combat engagement. Comrade MERZLENKO assumed the command over the unit and continued to pursue the retreating enemy.

Born 1901, none party member, Russian, drafted to Red Army by Dnepropetrovsk town military commissariat.
