Description
Soviet Order of the Patriotic War 1st class #30814
Awarded to Guards Colonel Aleksei Pavlovich Golovko (Алексей Павлович Головко)
Chief of the 2nd Section of the NKVD Border Guards, Karelo-Finnish District
Made of solid gold, silver and enamels. Measures 46.01 mm in height, 43.74 mm in width and it weighs 28.8 gram without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark Monetni Dvor at the 12 o’clock position of its reverse.
This original order of the Patriotic War is in great condition. The details are crisp and even the higher laying parts like the hammer and sickle show little wear. Both the white and red enamels are problem free and without repairs. Its screw has not been shortened and is extremely long which is seen only with these very early screwback types. The silver screwplate fits well and is original to the award.
Excellent example of a very early screwback Order of the Patriotic war!
Brief description of his feat of arms or achievements:
“Guards Colonel Golovko has been serving as deputy chief of the Operations Section of the 10th Guards Army since February 10, 1944.
During the Front’s offensive operation of July this year, the Army breached the enemy’s defenses on the Kudever axis and a number of intermediate lines on the approaches to the city of Opochka. Having crushed the enemy’s defenses on the Velikaya River, the Army seized the city of Opochka and thereupon the cities of Krasnogorodskoye, Zilupe, Ludza, and Kārsava, pressing the breakthrough and achieving a 150-kilometer-deep penetration in the shortest possible time (6 days). During this operation Guards Colonel Golovko ensured that all operational documents were drafted, that they were conveyed to the troops in a timely manner, and that their execution was monitored.
While visiting observation posts he arranged effective troop command and the timely provision of information to Army command about the actions of its forces and neighboring units.
During visits to the troops he provided practical assistance to the operations sections of the corps and division staffs.
For ensuring that all operational documents were drafted promptly, for conveying them to the troops in a timely manner, and for verifying they are carried out, I nominate Guards Colonel Golovko for the Order of the Red Banner.”
