Soviet Order of the Red Star #67334

Awarded to Sergeant Ivan Ivanovich Shumilov (Иван Иванович Шумилов)

For personally taking over a machine gun position while being under enemy mortar fire

Made of silver and enamels. The order measures 47.64 mm in width, 46.23 mm in height and weighs 29.6 gram without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark on the 12 o’clock position of its reverse. This early variation has a round base ‘heel’ of the screw.

In damaged condition with medium to strong wear on the higher laying parts of the center medallion. The enamel shows repairs on the 5 and 9 o’clock rays of the star and is lost on the 7 o’clock ray. The reverse is in much better condition with an appealing dark toning to the silver and few traces of wear. Its screw is full length and the order comes with its time period silver screwplate.

Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

“Having discovered a machine gun in a pillbox that was hindering our infantry’s advance, gun commander Jr. Sergeant Shumilov I. I. immediately opened fire and, in spite of shelling from enemy mortars, he personally took over the gun, relieving the gunlayer, and blasted the pillbox and destroyed the machine gun.

In a single day, [his] anti-tank gun silenced three machine gun nests, an enemy observation post, and a machine gun position in a house. He expends shells economically; each round is delivered only on-target. Junior Sergeant Shumilov is disciplined; he possesses steadfastness and bravery.

He deserves the government award the Order of the Red star.”
