Description
Order of the Red Star #669809
Awarded to Lieutenant Grigoriy Ignatievich Koval (Григорий Игнатьевич Коваль)
For quickly mastering the American 40mm air defense cannon, effectively leading his platoon during an enemy air attack, and achieving the destruction of 1 enemy aircraft and 7 illumination bombs
Made of silver and enamels. Measures 48.8 mm in width, 46.9 mm in height and weighs 28.9 gram. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post.
This order is in excellent, well above average condition with most details visible. The enamel is very well preserved without repairs and only shows some small contact marks. Its screw has not been shortened and its wartime nut fits well.
Its accompanying military ID is in used but complete condition and shows an original picture of Lt. Koval on the first page.
The order comes without a registration card but was purchased directly from the family together with the military ID, so we have no doubts it was awarded to Lt. Koval. However, for a small additional fee, we can request it from the archive if needed.
Short translation of his feats:
KOVAL, in a short period of time, studied the American 40mm artillery air defense cannon, learned to shoot quickly and accurately, and skillfully prepared cannons for combat operations against enemy aviation near station DARNITSA on April 8, 1944. Through excellent preparation, the cannons worked without any delays during firing. He boldly and decisively managed the platoon during enemy aviation bombing and, by his personal example, inspired the soldiers; as a result, 1 enemy plane was shot down and 7 illumination aviation bombs were destroyed.
