Order of the Red Star #339396

 

Awarded to Sergeant Yakov Ponkratievich Lebid (Яков Понкратьевич Лебидь)

 

For bravery and effective combat actions, including killing 25 German soldiers, destroying a heavy machine gun, damaging an enemy mortar, and supporting infantry operations with machine-gun fire

 

 

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 47.94 mm in width, 46.22 mm in height and weighs 27.8 grams without its screwplate. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post. The minimum known serial number is 235999 and the maximum is 594967.

 

In great, above average condition with light to medium wear. The red enamels are well preserved without repairs and show some dings and scratches only.  The raised areas on its obverse still show most details and it reverse shows an appealing toning to the silver. Its screw has not been shortened and the silver screwplate is time period to the order.

 

Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits:

Examples of bravery and courage were shown by Lebid in battles against the German invaders. Constantly moving with the infantry company’s combat formations, he cleared the way and provided cover with machine-gun fire. In the battle at the village of Moldavanskaya, he killed 25 German soldiers and destroyed a heavy machine gun with his fire. In the battle for the village of Sennaya, he damaged an enemy mortar and wounded its crew.
For his skill and excellent execution of combat tasks assigned by the command of the 696th Rifle Regiment, Lebid is recommended for the Government award, the Order of the Red Star.
