Soviet Order of the Red Star #216036

Awarded to Major Pyotr Aleksandrovich Shavkin (Петр Александрович Шавкин)

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 48.52 mm in width and 46.54 mm in height. The order weighs 28.6 gram without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark on the 12 o’clock position of its reverse. This early variation has a round base of the screw.

This original order of the Red Star is in an excellent, well above average condition. The details are mostly visible and the enamels are flawless. The reverse is in perfect condition with no dings or scratches. There have been no repairs and the screwpost is full length. It comes with its time period silver screwplate and both sides show an appealing dark patina.

A stunning naval award with great eyeappeal. Scarce as such!

Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

“Led by comrade Shavkin, the Northern Fleet staff’s Naval Censorship Section put a great deal of effort into ensuring no military secrets were disclosed. Owing to the section’s duties, during the last months of 1943 only sporadic violations were encountered in unit newspapers. During a duty-wise review by Navy High Command, the section attained first place among the fleet and flotilla sections. Comrade Shavkin himself energetically and persistently tackled violations in publications. He distinguishes himself through his exceptionally demanding attitude. By personally visiting the units he greatly assisted the part-time censors, making sure they set high expectations and show more vigilance.

The Naval Censorship Section prevented 197 cases in which military secrets would have been divulged; in 4 cases articles were removed altogether. Over the course of 1943, he held 949 talks and lectures within the units on issued pertaining to the keeping of military secrets.

For the effort he put into ensuring no military secrets were disclosed in fleet publications, comrade Shavkin deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Star.”
