Soviet screwback Order of the Red Banner #29487

Николай Степанович Завьялов

Awarded to Senior Lieutenant Nikolay Stepanovich Zavyalov (Николай Степанович Завьялов)

After he took over the command of the squadron they destroyed up to 10 enemy mortar batteries and about 20 machine-gun positions. Destroyed 20 pillboxes, 5 anti-tank guns, and eliminated up to 500 enemy troops

This order of the Red Banner is made of silver and enamels. It measures 40.97 mm in height, 36.23 mm in width and weighs 22.7 gram without its screwplate. The serial number and mint mark are located at the 6 o’clock position of its reverse.

In a nice but worn condition. The details are mostly present and the higher laying parts like the centre wreath and the torch show medium wear. The white enamel is pristine and the red enamel is mostly original. The latter however shows some epoxy repairs on the rays of the centre red star and the bottom of the top banner. These appears to be old repairs considering the cracks underneath the surface but were not done at the point in history the picture above was taken. Interesting note: the missing enamels are clearly visible at exactly the places the epoxy is used. The picture also shows Lt. Zavyalov used an improvised suspension device which at some point in time was removed again. The screw however maintained its full length and the original silver screwplate fits perfectly.

Not in the best possible condition but with nice research and great eye appeal!

Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

“He has been a squadron commander since December 1941 and proved himself in this capacity as a brave, proactive and disciplined officer.

The squadron executes well all its objectives, its staff has good combat cohesion and in full combat readiness.

The squadron delivered the following damage to the enemy during the period since ZAVYALOV took over the command: suppressed or destroyed up to 10 enemy mortar batteries and about 20 machine-gun positions. Demolished up to 20 pillboxes and dugouts with firing installations and enemy personnel, destroyed 5 anti-tank guns, and eliminated up to 500 enemy troops.

Near the settlement Rokot, the squadrons artillery barrage demolished the enemy field fortifications, thus clearing the way for our advancing infantry.

For the combat merits, I recommend Sr. Lieutenant ZAVYALOV for a state award. ”
