Description

Soviet Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #5628

Awarded to Senior Sergeant Viktor Fedorovich Kutepov (Виктор Федорович Кутепов)

For destroying 1 tank, 1 pillbox, a group of entrenched submachine gunners, up to 40 enemy troops and 1 vehicle while being under heavy enemy mortar fire

Made of solid silver, gold and enamels. The medal itself measures 42.22 mm in width, 46.18 mm in height including the eyelet and it weighs 27.2 gram without its suspension and 36.0 gram with suspension but without its nut. The suspension measures 32.26 mm in width at its widest point and 21.41 mm in height at its narrow part (without the eyelet). The serial number is located at the 5 o’clock position on the reverse which indicates this is a Moscow Mint production. The minimum known number of this variation is 3722 and the maximum known number is 7073. Therefore less than 3500 pieces of this variation were awarded (not even talking into account the overlapping of numbers of other variations).

This order of the Patriotic War 2nd class is in a nice, above average condition with all parts original (including its suspension and stickpin) and without repairs. Its details are perfectly visible and there are few dings and scratches only. The white enamels are all present with minor chipping. The red enamels are beautiful without problems apart from the 12 o’clock ray of the red star which is lost. The suspension and screwplate are typical for this Moscow Mint variation and slightly differ from the ones used by the Krasnokamsk Mint (KMD). The original plastic cover is still (partly) present and the ribbon is original as well. This piece has never been converted or replaced for a reissue since Sgt. Kutepov was killed in action in 1944.

Rare variation and especially hard to find with all parts original!

Brief translation of the research:

“The German invaders attempted series of assaults near the village Maliy Malgobek during the period 14-17 October 1942. All these assaults were fended off. The gun commander of the 76mm battery (1131 rifle regiment, 337 rifle division) Senior Sergeant KUTEPOV fought gallantly. Despite the fact, that his open sights firing position was under heavy enemy mortar fire, he and his crew inflicted the following damage to the enemy: 1 tank, 1 pillbox, a group of entrenched submachine gunners, up to 40 enemy troops, and 1 vehicle.

For steadfastness and courage, I recommend senior sergeant KUTEPOV for the order “PATRIOTIC WAR II CLASS”. ”
