Awarded to Guards Lt. Markar Nikolaevich Mzarulov (Маркар Николаевич Мзариулов)
For demonstrating exceptional steadfastness and courage during the Battle of Stalingrad. While providing vital air defense (PVO) support for the headquarters of the 3rd Guards Stalingrad Mechanized Corps, he successfully downed two enemy aircraft with his platoon
Moscow Mint (MMD) variation made of solid silver, gold and enamels. The order weighs 30.6 grams without its screwplate and measures 43.0 mm in width and 43.7 mm in height. The minimum known serial number is 3722 and the highest is 7073.
This early award, originally issued on a suspension mount, was converted to a screwback version by the recipient following the 1943 regulations on wearing Soviet awards. The original suspension components -including the silver rectangular plate, the screwpost, and the screwplate- were utilized for this conversion. Aside from this period modification, the order remains in nice condition with no enamel repairs or significant chipping.
Brief and specific description of the personal feat or merits:
Comrade Mzariulov, in battles with the German invaders on the Stalingrad and Southern fronts, demonstrated steadfastness and courage. Over a short period of combat operations, while performing air defense (PVO) tasks for the headquarters of the 3rd Guards Stalingrad Mechanized Corps, his platoon shot down 2 enemy aircraft.
He deserves the government award: the Order of the “Red Star”.
