Short translation of the research:
During the battle for the village of Mirenya, Glinkovsky district, Smolensk region, Comrade Shilov advanced his heavy machine gun into the battle formations of our infantry platoon. He noticed 13 Germans laying mines near barbed wire obstacles and destroyed them.
When our infantry rose to attack, the Germans opened with heavy machine gun fire from the right flank, halting the infantry’s advance. Without waiting for the platoon commander’s order, Comrade Shilov shifted his firing position and, with several well-aimed bursts, destroyed the enemy’s heavy machine gun and its crew.
As our infantry took advantageous positions and entrenched themselves, Comrade Shilov advanced to the enemy’s forward barbed wire obstacles, where he conducted observation. He overheard German conversations in the trenches, quickly repositioned a new machine gun in a shell crater, and, when the Germans came out of their trenches, opened devastating fire, killing 4 more Germans and wounding several others.
For displayed courage and bravery in battle, Comrade Shilov is worthy of the government award – the Order of the Red Star. [Later downgraded to an Order of Glory]
