Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

The excellent qualities of a resourceful, fearless combat commander, Lieutenant Kovalenko displayed in combat during the breakthrough of the German defense lines near the city of Rybnik and during the fighting for the city of Ratibor (March 26-31, 1945). For example, during the fighting for the town of Fichgrund in the Ratibor region (Germany) on March 28 and 29, 1945, Lieutenant Kovalenko, taking a courageous decision, outflanked the enemy from the left and after an assault occupied several houses. Having captured some Faust rounds, comrade Kovalenko started using them to set the houses, which were turned into firing positions by the Germans, on fire, and successfully pushed forward. During this bold operation Lieutenant Kovalenko’s company killed up to 40 German soldiers.

Pursuing the enemy, comrade Kovalenko finished them off on March 30, 1945 to the right of the village of Dembitsch (Germany), where he killed 23 hitlerites and took two prisoners. The others retreated in panic, being pursued by our troops.

In man-to-man combat, comrade Kovalenko killed 4 enemy soldiers and shot 7 soldiers with his machine gun, displaying examples of courage and fearlessness in front of his men and officers.

He deserves to be awarded the Order of Aleksandr Nevsky.
