Scarce sub-variation
Made of brass. Measures 32.0 mm in diameter, 37.5 mm in height including its eyelet and weighs 17.5 grams without its suspension.
This medal is in well preserved condition with most details visible and light overall wear. Both sides show several dings and scratches and a small amount of the original luster is still present between the lettering on its reverse. Its double layer steel suspension is time period to the medal and its connection ring has not been cut.
A rare sub-variation with a highly noticeable difference; the building’s roof near the right edge of the medal has a shortened, slanted end that does not reach the border, and the wall features seven windows instead of the usual eight. The reverse of the medal was struck with a unique die, distinct from all others. This is evident not only in the subtle differences in letter shapes but also in the depiction of the hammer and sickle. Notably, the sickle’s handle has a cylindrical, elongated form without the characteristic oval thickening. Additionally, there is no bump in the handle’s projection.

The Medal “For the Defense of Moscow” was established on May 1, 1944 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Its statute was later amended by Resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on March 8, 1945. The medal’s statute was finally amended one last time on July 18, 1980 by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR № 2523-X
