Research of the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class:
Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:
“On January 25, 1944 the commander of the pole line platoon was wounded while carrying out the assignment of organizing communications between the 112th Rifle Corps command post and the 377th Rifle Division command post near the village of Dolgovo.
With contempt for death, and subjected to artillery and mortar fire, comrade Markov assumed command of the platoon and ensured the task was completed. Comrade Markov’s platoon placed more than 100 kilometers of pole wire line, stringing the line over a morass. While carrying out the task of placing the line, the platoon mainly had to physically carry all equipment themselves.
Near the village of Saviny Polyany the platoon placed the line across the fields from the water, facing a lack of roads and subjected to enemy fire.
Comrade Markov’s platoon carried out all of its assignments ahead of schedule. Throughout the period of combat it maintained uninterrupted communications with the commander of the 377th Rifle Division.
He deserves to be awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class.”
Research of the Bravery Medal:
Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:
“During the Smerdynya operation the platoon in which comrade Markov was assistant platoon leader carried out the assignment of providing wire communications between the Army staff and the 198th Rifle Division. At this point he displayed maximum vigor and the willpower of a true leader in the performance of duty. His sector of the line passed through a clearing in the woods, which was constant subjected to artillery and mortar shelling. On February 13 of this year he was given orders to provide the Division commander’s observation post with communications across a minefield. Lying on his stomach comrade Markov crawled for 400 meters, choosing a corridor for laying the cable, and in this sector he disarmed seven mines.
On February 16 of this year a shell exploded near comrade Markov’s monitoring post; a dugout was destroyed and four troops were trapped under the debris. Within 10 minutes comrade Markov freed the men. After this he gave first aid to them and led them in mending the line. In life-threatening spots he shouted Bolshevik battle cries, calling for victory, and in 30 minutes 20 breaks were repaired.
For his personal heroism and bravery, I apply for him to be awarded the Medal for Courage.”
