Description
Order of the Red Star #3767044
Awarded to Private Joseph Stepanovich Golovaty (Иосиф Степанович Головатый)
For swiftly deploying his machine gun and opening heavy fire on the advancing enemy, eliminating one machine gun crew, one anti-tank rifle team, and up to 20 enemy soldiers
Scarce and very late Soviet variation with a serial number engraved with a rotating tool
Note that Private Golovaty was awarded the Red Star in 1945, but it took decades before he actually received it, resulting in the extremely high serial number
Made of silver and enamels. Measures 48.15 mm in width, 46.12 mm in height and weighs 29.8 grams. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post.
In near mint condition with all details crisp and an appealing patina to the silver on both sides. The red enamels are absolute stunning without any dings, scratches or even contact marks. Its screw has not been shortened and the order comes with its well fitted screwplate.
Its accompanying booklet is in superb condition too with all pages firmly attached to the cover. It mentions this Order of the Red Star alone and is numbered ‘Л 584850’.
Short excerpt and translation of the research:
On July 17, 1944, during the battle for the capture of the settlement Murafa, the enemy attempted to counterattack with a secret reserve force, striking the left flank of our battalion. Comrade Golovaty, noticing the enemy, swiftly deployed his machine gun and opened heavy fire on the approaching enemy forces.
By suppressing the advancing enemy forces with well-aimed fire and eliminating their soldiers, he enabled our unit to quickly reorganize and repel the enemy counterattack, ensuring the continued advance of our troops.
In this battle, he personally eliminated one enemy machine gun crew, one anti-tank rifle team, and up to 20 enemy soldiers and officers.
For his bravery, I nominate Private Golovaty Joseph Stepanovich for the Order of the Red Star.
