This set was acquired directly from Lyamin’s daughter, who was kind enough to also provide me with a digital book about her family. Key details from the relevant pages can be found here:

Family Background and Early Life

Юлий Дмитриевич Лямин was born on July 12, 1925, in Moscow, in the family of Dmitry Ivanovich Lyamin and Lyubov Nikolaevna Lyamina (née Popova). The family lived in a large wooden house in the Maryina Roshcha district. The house was two stories tall with high ceilings, and multiple relatives lived there.

His mother passed away either during or just before the war, leaving him and his two younger sisters, Mila and Vera, the latter being just two years old at the time.

The family was well-off, likely of merchant origin. His father, Dmitry Ivanovich, continued to raise the children in this large, communal household.

Marriage and Family Life

Юлий Дмитриевич married Lidiya Ivanovna Lyamina (née Popova) in early 1951. His wife, Lidiya, humorously noted that their family was “three-quarters Popov” because both her maiden name and Юлий’s mother’s maiden name were Popova.

Their only child, Lyubov Yulievna Lyamina, was born on October 14, 1951.

In 1952, the family moved to one of the Stalin-era high-rise buildings near Krasnye Vorota in Moscow, as Юлий’s father, Dmitry Ivanovich, was a professor at Moscow State University (MGU) and was provided an apartment.

Education and Career

During World War II, Юлий Дмитриевич’s family, like many others, was evacuated to Novosibirsk, where they stayed in close contact with other faculty members from the Moscow Engineering and Construction Institute (МИСИ).

Upon returning to Moscow, Юлий attended university and later pursued a career as an engineer, all his life he worked at the Ilyushin Aircraft Design Bureau moving from the position of junior engineer to lead designer. His awards were for participation in the design of IL-14, IL-18, IL-62.
