Complete Group consisting of an Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class and two Red Stars

 

Марченко Илларион Кузьмич

 

Awarded to Guards Sr. Lieutenant Illarion Kuzmich Marchenko (Илларион Кузьмич Марченко)

 

For displaying exceptional bravery in leading his platoon in multiple assaults. His unit killed over 330 enemy soldiers, captured 55 and destroyed over 20 vehicles. Personally, he led successful river crossings under fire, ambushed and eliminated a company-sized enemy force, and killed at least six enemy soldiers in direct combat

 

 

Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #491710

Made of solid silver, gold and enamels. The order weighs 25.5 grams without its screwplate and measures 44.07 mm in width and 46.14 mm in height.

In excellent condition with crisp details and light overall wear. The enamels are intact, with no repairs or chipping, showing only minor dings and scratches. The order includes its original period screwplate, which fits well but tightens securely only at the lower half of the screw. The screw remains unshortened.

 

Order of the Red Star #567128

Made of solid silver and enamels. The order weighs 25.5 grams without its screwplate and measures 48.18 mm in width and 46.60 mm in height.

In good overall condition with moderate wear on the raised areas of the central medallion. The enamels are mostly intact but have been restored with lacquer on the 5 o’clock ray. The order includes its original, well-fitted period silver screwplate, and the screw remains full length.

 

Order of the Red Star #961691

Made of solid silver and enamels. The order weighs 32.6 grams without its screwplate and measures 49.41 mm in width and 48.32 mm in height.

In excellent condition with problem free enamels. The raised areas show light wear only and most details are crisp. It comes with its time period screwplate and its screw is full length.

 

Citation for Order of the Patriotic War #491710:

During winter advancing combats Marchenko showed himself as brave, courageous, initiative and excellent using tactic of modern combat commander. Moving with his company in first rows he repeatedly met enemy’s resistance, but he able quickly made passages for battalion. In January 26, 1945 in combat for railway station Ławica his company among first burst into outskirts and through clear and decisive actions of railway station was captured. During combats Marchenko’s company caused big losses to enemy in manpower and technics: killed 250 German’s soldiers and officers, 38 captured, destroyed 17 vehicles. Personally Marchenko was in combat formations and by personal example inspired soldiers on feats.

Deserves governmental award order Bohdan Khmelnutsky III class.

 

Citation for Red Star #567128:

Marchenko during advancing combats from March 21 to 30, 1944 showed examples of bravery and courage.
In March 24, 1944 during crossing river Dniester Marchenko personally under enemy’s fire, with risk to life on a log from a blown up bridge one among first crossed on right bank of Dniester and this secured crossing of this river by other members of his platoon. His platoon transferred during 30 minutes, Marchenko was sent by commander of battalion on river bank of Dniester, for expansion bridgehead and covering of crossing, where Marchenko met around company of enemy infantry, and by skillful maneuver bypassed from side in forest into enemy’s rear and killed 30 Germans, a other escaped, battalion continue crossing Dniester. In March 29, 1944 Marchenko first burst into town and by his platoon and killed personally 6 German soldiers. Marchenko deserves governmental award order “Red Star”.

 

Citation for Red Star #961691:

Marchenko in advancing combats showed himself as brave, decisive and clever commander. All combat operations from July 17, 1944 on 1st Ukrainian front, managing his platoon caused big losses to Germans in manpower and technics. During crossing river Sam in July 23 he with his platoon first crossed this river and joined battle for expansion bridgehead on opposite bank. His platoon one among first burst into village Kostkow of Krakow region and joined combat. In this Germans lost 2 armored personnel carriers, 4 wagons with military cargo, killed 80 soldiers and officers and captured 17. Deserves governmental award.
