Description

Order of the Red Banner #8607

Awarded to Jr. Commander Iosif Alekseevich Vanichek (Иосиф Алексеевич Ваничек)

For exemplary performance of combat missions of the Command on the front in the fight against the Finnish White Guards and the valor and courage displayed in doing so

Vanichek was later in OMSBON – Moscow formed special forces of NKVD troops. It seems he was KIA either in 1942 or 1943, while serving in the unit. Considering the condition of the order it might be a German war trophy

‘Mirror Reverse’ variation with a strong counter relief. Made of silver and enamels. It measures 39.93 mm in height, 36.18 mm in width and weighs 25.5 grams without its screwplate. The serial number and mint mark are located at the 6 o’clock position of its reverse.

In excellent, well above average condition with light overall wear and much of the original gold plating present. Its details are still well defined on the raised areas like the center wreath and the torch. The enamels are extremely well preserved considering it is an early screwback and show a chip on the 9 o’clock ray of the center star and a superficial chip on top only. Its reverse is in near mint condition and shows a stunning patina to the silver. Its screw has not been shortened and there have been no repairs. The order comes with its well fitted and original silver screwplate.

Scarce piece with great eye appeal
