Medal for Bravery #245295

Ковалев Григорий Иосифович

Awarded to Lieutenant Grigory Iosifovich Kovalev (Григорий Иосифович Ковалев)

For courage and steadfastness as an anti-aircraft platoon commander, where he skillfully organized defensive fire and shot down multiple enemy aircraft (Ju-87, Me-109, Fw-190)

Made of solid silver and lacquer. Measures 37.62 mm in diameter and 2.68 mm in thickness. The height of the medal is 41.54 mm (including the eyelet) and it weighs 25.6 grams without its suspension. Its silver suspension measures 25.22 mm in width at its narrowest point and 31.46 at its widest point.

The medal is in a good, vintage condition with medium overall wear. The details of the raised areas like the rivets on the side of the tank and the canons are still visible. The red lacquer filling the letters appears to have been replaced professionally. All parts of the silver suspension are original including the ribbon, rectangular plate, small hexagon nut and screwplate.

Scarce to find with all original parts

Brief description of his achievements:

Comrade Kovalev, working as the commander of an anti-aircraft platoon from the beginning of the Patriotic War, proved himself a courageous, steadfast, and disciplined commander. In January 1942, during our offensive operations near the town of Izium against the advancing enemy aviation, the platoon commanded by Comrade Kovalev opened heavy defensive fire and shot down two enemy bombers Ju-87.

During the offensive near Izium, when our troops forced the northern bank of the Donets River, enemy aviation appeared — two Messerschmitt-109 fighters, one of which attacked our stormtroopers. Comrade Kovalev immediately opened heavy barrage fire and shot down one Messerschmitt-109.

In March, in the area of the Penzan collective farm, the anti-aircraft platoon of Comrade Kovalev was covering our infantry in the offensive. In the air appeared four enemy fighters Me-109, which tried to attack our stormtroopers. Comrade Kovalev opened heavy barrage fire, and one of the enemy fighters was shot down — a Focke-Wulf-190.

For the courage and bravery shown in the fight against enemy aviation, Comrade Kovalev deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Star. [Later downgraded to a Medal for Bravery]
