Order of the Red Banner #61708

Awarded to SB-Pilot and Captain Nikolaj Mikhailovich Egorov (Николай Михайлович Егоров)

For attacking railway stations killing hundreds of Hitlerites, destroying several trains and ammunition depots and destroying dozens of enemy planes when attaching enemy airfields

Made of solid silver and enamels. It measures 40.55 mm in height, 36.52 mm in width and weighs 23.0 grams without its screwplate. The serial number and the mint mark Monetni Dvor are located at the 6 o’clock position of its reverse.

The order is in an excellent, well above average condition with light overall wear. Even the higher laying parts such as the center wreath and the torch still show their detail. The enamels are in much better condition than most early Red Banners. The red enamel show some minor flaking around the edges only and the white enamels are flawless. The screwpost has not been shortened or repaired and comes with its time period and well fitted silver screwplate. At some point an eyelet for a suspension might have been attached to its reverse. We are not completely sure but they did a great job removing it is it this indeed has been the case.

Short Description of his feat of arms:

“In the early period of the war, comrade EGOROV flew as an aviation squadron bombardier on the Western front. He made 17 combat sorties on SB aircraft.

At present, comrade EGOROV participates on the fronts of the Patriotic war as part of the long range aviation in the capacity of a bombardier of an aviation squadron. He has been flying in the air crew of Cpt. KARASEV and has made 26 night combat sorties.

As a bombardier, comrade EGOROV efficiently shares his theoretical as well as practical combat experience with the subordinates. During his combat service in the long range aviation, comrade EGOROV hasn’t had any flying incidents caused by him. He dedicates a lot of effort preparing freshmen bombardiers for the night missions, personally trains them and controls their proficiency progress.

Comrade EGOROV has made several combat missions against the railroad stations: Vyazma, Smolensk, Yartsevo, Nevel, Polotsk, Orsha, Vytebsk. As the result of the strike of a group of our aircrafts against the rail station Vytebsk, up to 500 Hitlerites were eliminated, 3 trains and several steamers were destroyed, ammunition and fuel depots were destroyed. He also participated in the mission against the enemy airfields: Orel, Dvoevka, Vytebsk, Smolensk, Sescha. As the result of these strikes, 73 hostile aircrafts were destroyed, airfields taken out of function, airfield structures demolished.

Comrade EGOROV participated in the strikes against the enemy troops and armour concentrations, against enemy fortifications in the towns: Velikie Luki, Novosokolniki. The ground troops command gave good evaluation of these strikes.

Comrade EGOROV always diligently prepares for the combat missions himself, as well as prepares all the bombardiers of the squadron.

For exhibited courage and bravery, for his skill in delivering precise strikes against the enemy during the Patriotic war, Captain EGOROV deserves state award order “RED BANNER”.”
