Awarded to Warrant Officer Grigory Petrovich Koshevoi (Григорий Петрович Кошевой) for 20 years service
Koshevoi served on the cruiser ‘Komintern‘ and was involved in the defenses of Odessa, Sevastopol and Novorossiysk and the landings at Feodosia
Made of solid silver and enamels. Measures 45.33 mm in height, 37.41 mm in width and it weighs 25.3 gram without its suspension. The serial number and curved mint mark are located at the 6 o’clock position of its reverse.
This Order of the Red Banner is in overall nice condition with light to medium wear on the silver. The details are mostly crisp and much of the original gold plating is still present. The white enamel is flawless and the red enamel shows minor chipping around the edges and a larger chip on the top left side of the large banner. Its connection ring has been cut and the order comes with an old brass suspension.
This Order of the Red Banner number 235009 was awarded on November 6, 1947 for 20 years of service to Warrant Officer Grigory Petrovich Koshevoi, senior instructor at the Joint School, Training Detachment of the Black Sea Fleet. He was born in 1905 and joined the Navy in 1927. During the prewar period he spent several years aboard the cruiser Komintern and the gunboat Krasnoye Znamya. In addition to this Red Banner and a long service Red Star and Order of Lenin, he was awarded an Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class in 1945 for his early wartime service: with the cruiser Komintern he took part in the defense of Odessa, Sevastopol and Novorossiysk and the landings at Feodosia and carried out minelaying operations. During the siege of the aforementioned cities the cruiser supplied its garrisons with various kinds of weapons and ammunition and evacuated thousands of wounded men. Koshevoi was actively involved in loading and unloading the cruiser. On one occasion, a 500-kilogram aerial bomb landed on the cruiser in the harbor of Novorossiysk. Koshevoi helped quench the fire and cooled a cellar in order to prevent it from catching fire; as a result, the cellar did not explode and a large amount of ammunition was saved. In May 1943 Koshevoi was transferred to a training school, where he proved to be highly disciplined and a true expert.
