Brief, concrete description of the personal combat feat or merits.
On 24 June 1944, during the crossing of the Western Dvina River, Comrade Volchkov was among the first to cross to the left bank of the river, where he immediately entrenched and prepared for defense. After some time, the enemy, deploying significant forces of tanks, infantry, and artillery, launched repeated counterattacks that continued throughout the night of 24–25 June 1944.
Comrade Volchkov steadfastly met the Hitlerites, skillfully cutting down German ranks with his rifle fire and repeatedly engaging in hand-to-hand combat. In this battle, he was severely wounded, but did not leave the battlefield and was not evacuated until unconscious. Already wounded, he stabbed one German to death with a bayonet at close quarters.
He is worthy of being awarded the title “Hero of the Soviet Union.”
It should be noted that he was not only initially recommended for the title Hero of the Soviet Union, but this recommendation was supported at higher levels of command. Ultimately, however, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
