Description
Soviet Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #4752
Awarded to Captain Larion Nikolaevich Borodynya (Ларион Николаевич Бородыня)
For eliminating 200 enemy troops with his unit in the winter of 1942
Made of solid silver and gold. It measures 42.69 mm in width, 46.50 mm in height including the eyelet and it weighs 26.1 gram without its suspension. The serial number is located at the 5 o’clock position on the reverse which indicates this is a Moscow Mint production. The minimum known number of this variation is 3722 and the maximum known number is 7073. Therefore less than 3500 pieces of this variation were awarded (not even talking into account the overlapping of numbers of other variations).
This order of the Patriotic War 2nd class is in worn, repaired condition. Although most details are perfectly visible there are numerous dings and scratches, especially on its reverse. The enamels shows several chips, dents and flaking but is believed to be original. The suspension and screwplate are replacements and its eyelet has been reattached. Its stickpin was broken off which is commonly seen with these early awards.
His piece is far from perfect with its repairs and damage. It is however a rare award and comes with nice research for a very attractive price!
Brief translation of the research:
“On his position as the artillery squadron chief of staff, Sr. Lieutenant BORODYNIA inspired his personnel by personal examples of courage, steadfastness, and tempered demeanour. In the complicated combat environment, he mobilised his troops for achieving the combat objectives.
In the short period after being assigned to the chief of staff position, he arranged for proper and precise accounting of the personnel, combat documentation, and fire control. He trained and prepared 4 new topography and plotting board specialists, who are skilled to produce targeting calculations in minimal time for concentration of the squadrons firepower.
During the offensive near Arestovo and Podosinovka in Nov.-Dec. 1942, he managed to properly setup the signalling links and establish uninterrupted fire control. In the periods when the signalling links to the upper command were severed by the avalanche of enemy fire, comrade BORODYNIA managed to sustain signalling and fire control to his firing positions and continued to deliver fire on his own initiative during 11-12 December 1942. In total during this period, his unit destroyed 6 enemy batteries, suppressed 8 batteries, eliminated 200 enemy troops, disrupted an enemy armour attack. In the March 1943 offensive, Sr.Lt. BORODYNIA kept uninterrupted signalling and fire control of the squadron, despite the advance of our troops.
With a massive artillery strike on 05.03.1943 near villages Rozhevo, Yarygino, Chupyatino, the squadron suppressed one artillery battery and eliminated up a platoon of enemy troops.
A massive strike on 11.03.1943 near the villages Aleksandrovskoe and Maslovo, eliminated up to 25 enemy troops. On 11.03.1943 near Knyazhino, an enemy platoon was scattered and partially eliminated, and the barbed wire obstacles were cleared on the enemy defensive line.”
