Awarded to Guards Lieutenant Aleksander Iosifovich Cheishvili (Александр Иосифович Чеишвили)
For courage and efficiency in the enemy defence breakthrough operations at the river Emajogi near the settlement Sarakuste [Estonia] during which a loaded truck and 5 horse carriages were destroyed, killing at least 25 enemy troops
Made out of silver, gold and enamels. Measures 47.79 mm in height and 45.83 mm in width. It weighs 22.3 grams without its screwplate. The serial number and mint mark are located at the bottom of its reverse.
In very good overall condition with crisp details and an appealing patina on both sides. The red and white enamels are fully present without repairs and show some small dings and minor chipping only. Its reverse is in equally nice condition with some small scratches on the right side of the screwpost. The order comes with its time period and well fitted silver screwplate and its screw has not been shortened.
Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:
“Comrade CHEISHVILI exhibited courage and efficiency in the enemy defence breakthrough operations on the river Emajogi near the settlement Sarakuste. On 17 September 1944, our opening artillery barrage completely paralysed the enemy system of fire defence on the sector of advance of 134 Guards rifle regiment. As the result of the military skill, 3 enemy machine-gun positions and a pillbox were destroyed, 2 mortar batteries were suppressed. As soon as the artillery barrage ended, comrade CHEISHVILI promptly organised for the cannons to be transported across the river. Not giving any chance to the stunned enemy to recover, he opened direct fire at the retreating enemy columns. During the period of the enemy pursuit, his artillery platoon destroyed one loaded truck and 5 horse carriages, killing at least 25 enemy troops.
He deserves to be bestowed with order “PATRIOTIC WAR II CLASS”.”
