Awarded posthumously to Captain Timofei Afanasyevich Chernikov (Тимофей Афанасьевич Черников)

 

For personally leading an assault without artillery support, seizing the town Poddubye [Leningrad front], capturing two ammunition dumps and a fuel depot, eliminating up to 50 enemy soldiers and officers, and holding the town against fierce counterattacks, where he fell a brave death on the battlefield

 

 

Made of solid gold, silver and enamels. Measures 45.13 mm in height, 43.58 mm in width and it weighs 26.1 grams without its screwplate. The serial number is located at the 6 o’clock position and the mint mark Monetni Dvor at the 12 o’clock position of its reverse.

 

In great condition  with its details sharp and well-defined, with minimal wear even on raised elements like the hammer and sickle. The red and white enamels are vibrant and intact, showing only a few minor dings and no repair. The order comes with its original silver screwplate which fits perfectly well.

 

Scarce and sought-after posthumous award to a brave man!

 

Brief description of his feat of arms or achievements:

Overseeing the operation to capture the town of Poddubye on January 24, 1944 without artillery support, Captain Chernikov personally headed a group of brave men from his battalion’s 8th Rifle Company. Having rushed into the town, he was able to seize it and capture two ammunition dumps and a fuel depot, killing as many as 50 enemy soldiers and officers in the process. Having captured the town, Captain Chernikov withstood fierce enemy counterattacks and managed to hold the town of Poddubye. He died a brave death on the battlefield.

He deserves to be awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class posthumously.
