Description
Soviet medal for the Capture of Vienna
Variation 3 ‘Voenkomat’
Made out of gilded brass. Measures 32.15 mm in width, 37.02 mm in height including its eyelet and weighs 16.1 gram without its suspension.
In superb condition with crisp details and full gold plating present. There are few small contract marks only, barely noticeable with the naked eye. The suspension and ribbon are time period to the medal.
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran’s place of residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary but in most instances, the Voenkomat medals were “catch-up” awards to those who had taken part in the battle and then somehow overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years.
Beautiful example of a less seen variation!
Awarded to Soviet service personnel who took part in the capture of Vienna between 16 March and 13 April 1945.
