Medal for Bravery #153461

 

Awarded to Estonian Sergeant Benno Juhanovich Mud (Беннр Юханович Муд / Бенно Иоганнович Муда)

 

For repairing under enemy fire a telephone line from the village Lavrino towards a white house on 28 December 1942. A Fascist counter-attack cut him off from the main force but he kept maintaining connection to the command post and thus helped to fend off the Fascist counter-attack

 

 

Made of solid silver and lacquer. Measures 37.14 mm in diameter and 2.93 mm in thickness. The height of the medal is 42.01 mm (including the eyelet) and it weighs 28.3 grams without its suspension. The suspension measures 25.27 mm in width at its narrowest point and 31.36 at its widest point. 

 

The medal for Bravery is in excellent condition with light wear relative to contemporary pieces. The details of the raised areas like the rivets on the side of the tank and the canons are visible and most of the lacquer filling the lettering is still present. All parts of the solid silver suspension are original and belong to the medal and its connection ring has not been cut.

Decree №22 on 07 February 1943

Section commander of signals company Sergeant MUD Benno Juhanovich is bestowed, because on 28 December 1942, he repaired under enemy fire a telephone line from the village Lavrino towards a white house. A Fascist counter-attack cut him off from the main force. But he kept maintaining connection to the command post and thus helped to fend off the Fascist counter-attack. Born in 1913, Estonian, drafted to The Red Army in January 1942 by Sverdlovsk district military commissariat.

Also present in the picture gallery is the map mentioning the “white houses” referred to in the citation. There were likely solid separately standing structures used for reference and as command posts. The German counterattack was an attempt of German garrison in Kamenka to break out to the German main force in Velikie Luki.
