Soviet Order for Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR 3rd class #101814

 

Awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Dmitrievich Sorokolad (Леонид Дмитриевич Сороколад)

 

For risking his life repairing aircrafts in Afghanistan and participating actively in the operation “Magistral”

 

 

Made of silver and enamels. Measurements; 57.94 mm in width; 57.99 mm in height and weighs 62.6 gram. The mint mark “Monjetnij dvor” is located above the screw post in one curved line and the serial number “101814” is positioned at the bottom of its reverse. The minimum known serial number awarded is 0043, the maximum is 140290.

 

This original order is in excellent condition with all details crisp. The blue and white enamels are flawless and there are few dings or scratches. There have been no repairs and the screw has not been shortened.

 

Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements:

“He has been stationed in the Afghanistan Republic since June 1987. As part of the operative airforce group, he participated in the governance of the engineering support of the combat operation. He is a brave and disciplined officer. Thanks to Lt.Colonel SOROKOLAD’s good leadership skills and exceptional diligence, the aircrafts damaged in combat missions are being restored and put back to service in very short time. This provides notable assistance to the execution the combat missions in support to the 40th Army troops. He personally investigated 5 damaged aircrafts and organised their repairs. He exceptionally distinguished himself on 14 August 1987 during the insurgents missile and mortar strike against the Bagram air base. Risking his life, he organised dispersal of the aircrafts across the airfield, which resulted in minimal damage suffered by the aircrafts. In the period from November 1987 to January 1988, he participated actively in the operation “Magistral”.

The award recommendation was examined and approved by the attestation commission of the Airforce Command of 40 Combined Arms Army, protocol № on “ ” March 1988.

CONCLUSION: For courage and bravery exhibited in provision of international aide to the Afghanistan Republic, he deserves state award order “For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of USSR” III class.”
