Description
Soviet Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad ‘Voenkomat’ with document
Awarded to Mikhail Maksimovich Arapin (Михаил Максимович Арапин)
Made of gilded brass. It measures 32.06 mm in width, 37.21 mm in height including the eyelet and it weighs 15.6 gram without its suspension.
This medal for the Defense of Stalingrad is in excellent condition with light overall wear. Its details are all visible and much gold plating is still present. Both sides show small contact marks but nothing distracting from the overall appeal of the medal. The brass suspension is time period to the medal and its connection ring has not been cut.
The accompanying document is in excellent condition too without stains or tears. It is dated 23 February 1971 and numbered T 011986
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran’s place of residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary but in most instances, the Voenkomat medals were “catch-up” awards to those who had taken part in the battle and then somehow overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years.
