Medal for the Defense of Odessa
Variation 2 ‘Voenkomat’
Made of gilded brass. It measures 32.10 mm in width, 37.13 mm in height including its eyelet and weighs 16.3 grams without its suspension.Â
This medal is in superb condition with perfect details and almost all of the original gold plating still present. Even the higher laying parts of the medal on both sides show light wear only with no noticeable dings and scratches. The medal comes with its time period aluminium suspension and its connection ring has not been cut.
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran’s place of residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary but in most instances, the Voenkomat medals were “catch-up” awards to those who had taken part in the battle and then somehow overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years.
