Medal for the Capture of Königsberg
Variation 4 ‘Voenkomat’
Made out of gilded brass. Measures 32.12 mm in width, 37.03 mm in height including its eyelet and weighs 16.0 grams without its suspension.
In excellent condition with crisp details and most gold plating still present. Its obverse shows a small dent on the lop left side only. It comes with its time period suspension and its connection ring has been cut.
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran’s place of residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary but in most instances, the Voenkomat medals were “catch-up” awards to those who had taken part in the battle and then somehow overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years.
Awarded to Soviet service personnel who took part in the capture of Königsberg between 23 January and 10 April 1945.
