Group of a Soviet Order of Glory and a Medal for Bravery

 

 

Awarded to Sergeant Ivan Ignatyevich Ivanov (Иван Игнатьевич Иванов)

 

For fighting at the Brest Fortress, killing 10+ Hitlerites in total and taking prisoners

 

 

 

The group consist of the following items:

 

Order of Glory #509089

 

Made of solid silver and enamels. Measures 45.27 mm in width; 47.84 mm in height and weighs 23.6 gram. The serial number is located on top of its reverse.

This order is in good, above average condition with most details present. The enamel shows some dings and minor flaking and there is a crack and the end on the banner surrounding the word ‘Slava’ but is otherwise all present and without repairs. The order shows a medium dark patina on both sides and its connection ring has not been cut. Its double layer steel suspension is authentic to the order and the stickpin has been replaced by a safety pin.

 

 

Medal for Bravery #2380586

Made of solid silver and enamels. Measures 37.30 mm in width, 42.73 mm in height (including its eyelet) and weighs 26.4 gram without its suspension.

The medals is in a nice, worn condition with all details present. The red lacquer is all lost and the medal shows a medium patina on both sides. Its connection ring has not been cut and the double layer steel suspension and ribbon are time period to the medal. The stickpin has been replaced by a safety pin.

 

 

Medal for Bravery #1758440

Unfortunately this medal was part of the group but was lost by our contact during transport. If it will be found in the future, it will be handed over to the buyer without additional costs.

 

 

Brief, concrete description of his feat of arms or achievements (for the Order of Glory 3rd class):

“Having served in the regiment since 1942, he always exhibits bravery and heroism. On March 26, 1945, during a river crossing, squad leader comrade Ivanov and his squad crossed the river and covered the battalion’s right flank. Serving among the frontline ranks, he fought his way forward.

Suddenly enemy machine guns ______ from behind. Having spotted one of the enemy machine guns, Sergeant Ivanov personally destroyed it, using his light machine gun, and took its crew prisoner. In addition he captured two light machine guns.

During these engagements comrade Ivanov killed as many as 6 Hitlerites.

He deserves the Order of Glory, 3rd Class.”

“During an offensive on February 28, 1945, squad leader comrade Ivanov and a group of submachine gunners started sweeping the woods. During the sweep the squad was met by heavy machine-gun fire from a German unit. With his submachine-gun comrade Ivanov gunned down the crew of a light machine gun and killed another two Hitlerites.

Owing to the squad leader’s decisive and courageous actions, the combat mission was accomplished without any losses.”

“Private First Class Ivan Ignatyevich Ivanov, submachine gunner in the Regiment’s Submachine-Gun Company. He has not been decorated.

On July 26, 1944, during the fighting at the city of Brest, he was one of the first to rush into a fortified enemy position – Fortress nr. 10 – and inspired the men of his unit to follow his example.

Born in 1911; not a Party member; Russian; in the Red Army since July 20, 1942; drafted by the Military Commissariat of Balagansk District, Irkutsk Province. Home address: _______________.”
