Awarded to IL-2 Pilot en Hero of the Soviet Union Lieutenant Vladimir Kharitonovich Ternovoy (Владимир Харитонович Терновой)

 

For extraordinary contributions during the Great Patriotic War, consistently demonstrating bravery, skill, and leadership across various missions on the Ukrainian front. He destroyed over 19 tanks, 144 vehicles, 15 fuel tank trucks and eliminated over 920 enemy soldiers and officers.

 

None of the Red Banners are for long service. Extremely rare to find together with their order booklet

Order of the Red Banner #172456

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 45.86 mm in height, 37.56 mm in width, and weighs 26.7 grams. The mint mark “Monetni Dvor” and the serial number are located at the bottom of the reverse.

In excellent, above-average condition with light to medium wear on the raised areas, while most details remain crisp. The white enamel is flawless, and the red enamel exhibits some minor superficial flaking around the edges, barely noticeable. Both sides display a medium patina to the silver, and its connection ring is intact.

 

Order of the Red Banner 2nd award #16498

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 44.91 mm in height, 37.24 mm in width, and weighs 27.3 grams. The mint mark “Monetni Dvor” and the serial number are located at the bottom of the reverse.

The enamels of this Red Banner have been professionally restored with hot enamels, making the restoration nearly undetectable to the naked eye. The details are well-preserved, and both sides exhibit minimal dings and scratches along with a dark patina on the silver. Its connection ring has been cut.

 

Order of the Red Banner 3rd award #4314

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 45.78 mm in height, 37.60 mm in width, and weighs 25.4 grams. The mint mark “Monetni Dvor” and the serial number are located at the bottom of the reverse.

In excellent condition with light wear on the raised areas, and all details are perfectly visible. The original red and white enamels are well-preserved, showing only minor dings and flakes. Its connection ring remains uncut.

 

Order of the Red Banner 4th award #1035

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 44.48 mm in height, 36.84 mm in width, and weighs 24.2 grams. The mint mark “Monetni Dvor” and the serial number are located at the bottom of the reverse.

Similar to the 2nd award, the enamels on this order have been professionally restored, with the work so precise it is nearly invisible. The raised details are perfectly crisp, and both sides show minimal dings and scratches with a dark patina on the silver. Its connection ring remains uncut.

 

Order Booklet

In excellent condition, with all pages firmly attached to the cover. It includes an original photograph of Lt. Ternovoy and lists all the awards mentioned above, along with the Patriotic War 1st Class, Nevsky, Hero Star, and Lenin.

Order of the Red Banner 1st 

Taking part in the Great Patriotic war on the Ukrainian front from 20.10.43. During the period from 20.10.43 until 14.12.43, he did 23 sorties for which he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st degree.
From 14.12.43 until 20.07.44, he made 27 successful sorties storming and bombarding the enemy’s troops and equipment. During those 27 sorties, comrade Ternovoy destroyed up to 50 enemy military vehicles carrying cargo and infantry, 3 tanks, killed up to 260 enemy officers and soldiers, suppressed up to 6 artillery and mortar batteries, burned 3 wagons and marked up to 10 targets. All the attacks were excellently executed, and the results were confirmed with pictures and by other crew members.
On 14.07 44 with a group of allies flying the IL II he made 4 sorties attacking the enemy troops and equipment in the GOROKHOV area. While approaching the target, the group was attacked by 10 FW190 and 4 ME109. Despite the fierce enemy fighter attacks, he managed to make his way to the target and successfully accomplished the mission destroying 2 tanks, and up to 10 enemy vehicles and causing 2 major explosions. The results of the attacks were confirmed with pictures and by other crew members.
On 20.07.44 he was flying with a group of IL2 fighters, he 5 times attacked enemy troops and equipment in Northern LVIV. Despite Heavy enemy fire, the tasks were successfully executed. Skillfully maneuvering, Comrade Ternovoy caused great damage to the enemy troops and equipment. With his fire and bombings, he destroyed and disabled up to 17 infantry vehicles, 5 firing positions and marked many other firing points. The results of the attacks were confirmed with pictures and by other crew members.
Comrade Ternovoy skillfully led his IL II squadron, always safely returning to the aerodrome.
For the exemplary execution of the military tasks, for showing courage and bravery, and for causing great damage to the enemy troops and equipment he is worth of the governmental award: “The Order of the Red Banner”.

 


Order of the Red Banner 2nd 

Taking part in the Great Patriotic war on the Ukrainian front from 20.10.43. During the period from 20.10.43 until 20.07.44, Comrade Ternovoy made 50 successful sorties for which he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st degree and the Order of the Red Banner.
From 20.07.44 until 27.08.44 Comrade Ternovoy made 30 successful sorties attacking the enemy troops and equipment, destroying 4 tanks, and 54 vehicles with troops and cargo, 4 fuel tank trucks and up to 250 enemy soldiers and officers. Also, he marked 11 firing positions. The results were confirmed by photographs.
He was acting flight commander from 13 to 27.07.44, his unit made 100 sorties, destroying and damaging 10 enemy tanks, 170 vehicles,12 fuel tank trucks, up to 650 enemy soldiers and officers, and marked several firing positions. He managed the unit in a successful manner.
On 20.07.44 he was flying with a group of IL2 fighters, he made 5 sorties attacking enemy troops and equipment in Northern LVIV. Despite Heavy enemy fire, the tasks were successfully executed. Skillfully maneuvering, Comrade Ternovoy caused great damage to the enemy troops and equipment. With his fire and bombings, he destroyed and disabled up to 17 infantry and cargo vehicles, 2 tanks, 5 firing positions and marked 6.
On 15.08.44, with along with a group of IL-II planes, he made 3 sorties fighting the enemy troops counterattack on the left bank of the river VISLA. While closing on the target the group was attacked by 8 ME109. Comrade Ternovoy skillfully repelled the enemy fighters, managed to redirect his plane towards the target and successfully executed the task.
For the exemplary execution of the military tasks, for showing courage and bravery, and for causing great damage to the enemy troops and equipment he is worth of the governmental award: “The Order of the Red Banner”.

 


Order of the Red Banner 3rd

Comrade Ternovoy took part in the war on the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian front from 20.10.44 until 20.07.45, made 50 successful sorties for which he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class and the Order of the Red Banner.
From 20.07.44 up to 08.12.44, Comrade Ternovoy made 55 successful sorties attacking enemy troops and equipment, out of which 9 successful sorties were carried out in the North and the North East of the city of Budapest. In the same area he destroyed 4 tanks, up to 6 vehicles carrying enemy soldiers and supplies, 4 fuel tank trucks, destroyed up to 100 enemy soldiers and officers, marked up to 10 firing positions and bombed two warehouses containing ammunition, fuel and lubricants. The results of those attacks were confirmed by images and by the commanders on the ground.
On 06.12.44, he flew three times to the ERD area through the enemy’s defense lines and despite heavy enemy anti-aircraft and fighter jets attacks the task was successfully accomplished; with his bomb load he destroyed 2 tanks, up to 15 vehicles, 2 fuel tank trucks, up to 40 enemy officers and soldiers, marked several firing positions and induced one big explosion.
On 07 and 08.12.44, he flew 9 times to the area of “Veresegyház”, skillfully maneuvering, he avoided enemy anti-aircraft barrage and fighter jets and made it to the target, successfully executing the task and returning to the aerodrome with no damages. During those strikes he inflicted heavy losses to the enemy’s manpower and equipment, destroying two tanks, 10 vehicles, and up to 20 soldiers. He also bombed one fuel warehouse.
Comrade Ternovoy and his group did not lose any aircraft.

Order of the Red Banner 4th

Comrade Ternovoy took part in the war on the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian front from 20.10.44 until 20.07.45, made 50 successful sorties attacking enemy troops and equipment for which he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class and the Order of the Red Banner.
From 03.12.44 up to 23.01.45, Comrade Ternovoy made 25 successful sorties attacking enemy troops and equipment, in which he personally destroyed 3 tanks, up to 7 vehicles carrying enemy soldiers and supplies, 2 fuel tank trucks, dispersed and partially destroyed up to 100 officers and soldiers, marked 7 firing positions, silenced 2 field artillery and 1 anti-aircraft batteries. The results of those attacks were confirmed by images and by the commanders on the ground.
On 09.12.44, he flew twice with a group of IL-2 airplanes attacking enemy troops and equipment in the area of “Veresegyház”. The group was met with heavy anti-aircraft fire from the enemy. Skillfully applying the appropriate maneuver, Comrade Ternovoy aimed with precision on fuel trucks and vehicles. He destroyed up to 3 vehicles carrying troops and supplies and set fire in 2 fuel tanks. Confirmation of results was made by photos and by other crew members.
On 22.01.45, with a group of IL-2 pilots, he made 3 sorties attacking enemy troops and equipment in the city of Budapest and the northern part of the city of “Luchynets”. While closing on the target they were intercepted by enemy fighter planes. Comrade Ternovoi repelled the enemy fighter attack. Skillful maneuvering, he reached to and destroyed his target. He suppressed 2 enemy field artillery batteries and destroyed one armored troop carrier with a direct hit.
For the excellent execution of the military tasks, for excellent 25 sorties which caused huge damage to the enemy, he is worth of the governmental award: “The Order of the Red Banner”.


 

Short biography:

Born in 1921 in the village of Krutaya Gora, Slavianoserbsky district. In the Red Army since 1940, in 1943 he graduated from the Voroshilovgrad pilots school. Since 1943, he fought in the Great Patriotic War on the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian fronts. He made 195 sorties. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Guard Lieutenant Ternov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He was awarded 4 orders of the Red Banner, Alexander Nevsky, World War 1 degree, medals. In 1955, he was transferred to the reserve, buried in the city of Lugansk.
Vladimir Kharitonovich Ternovoy Link commander of the 91st Guards Assault Aviation Regiment (4th Guards Assault Aviation Division, 5th Assault Aviation Corps, 5th Air Army, 2nd Ukrainian Front),
Guard Lieutenant Vladimir Kharitonovich Ternovoy was born on July 21, 1921 in the village of Krutaya Gora, now the village of the “Slavianoserbsky” district, in a peasant family. He joined the Red Army in 1940. He fought on the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian fronts supporting ground troops from the air in battles at the Bukrinsky bridgehead and during the liberation of Kiev.
By the end of April 1945, he made 178 sorties to attack the enemy troops, in which he destroyed 24 tanks, 116 vehicles, 23 anti-aircraft artillery guns, 19 anti-aircraft machine-gun points, 12 mortars, 3 steam locomotives, 26 railway cars, 11 tank wagons fuel, 103 freight wagons, 2 warehouses with fuel and 9 with ammunition, up to 600 enemy soldiers and officers.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, for the exemplary performance of command tasks and the courage and heroism shown, the guards gave Lieutenant Ternov Vladimir Kharitonovich the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal.
