Awarded to Guards Captain Nikolay Alexandrovich Kuts (Николай Александрович Куць)

 

For providing air defense during the Battle of Kursk, where he and his crews shot down five German aircraft despite heavy bombing. In the Berlin Offensive (April 15–29, 1945), his company downed three Fw-190s and took part in street fighting, clearing buildings and cellars, killing over ten Panzerfaust crews and up to a platoon of enemy troops

 

 

This group of Soviet awards consists of the following items:

 

Order of the Red Banner #70843

Made of silver and enamels. Measures 40.80 mm in height, 36.62 mm in width and weighs 24.1 grams without its screwplate. Its serial number and mint mark are found on the bottom of its reverse.

The order is in nice, above average condition with medium overall wear. Even raised areas such as the center wreath and the torch still show most of their details. The enamels are in better condition than most early Red Banners. It shows the often seen chipping on two rays of the center red star and a small chip on the top banner, still well over 90% is still present. The white enamels are without damage and very well preserved. The order has never been (re)converted to a suspension type piece and its screwpost is full length. It comes with its time period silver screwplate.

 

Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class #404922

Made of solid silver, gold and enamels. Measures 47.19 mm in height, 45.33 mm in width and weighs 25.7 grams without its screwplate.

In good overall condition with crisp edges of the gold hammer and sickle. The red and white enamels are mostly present without repairs and show some dents and light chipping. Its reverse is excellent condition with relatively few dings and a full length screw. The order comes with its time period and well fitting nut.

 

Order of the Red Star #3275998

Made of solid silver and red enamels. It measures 47.64 mm in width, 45.17 mm in height and weighs 29.9 grams without its screwplate.

In near mint condition with perfect details and minor traces of wear only. The beautiful wine red enamels are extremely well preserved without repairs or dents. Both sides display a nice toning to the silver and its screw has not been shortened.

 

Order Booklet

In problem free condition with all pages present and still firmly attached to the cover. It mentions all three numbered awards above together with an Order of the Patriotic War 1st class which is missing.

 


Citation for the Order of the Red Banner: 

Commander of anti-aircraft machine-gun company of 107 tank brigade, 16 tank corps.

Comrade KUTS trained very well his machine-gun crews for combat operations. He efficiently commanded his company during the battle, in which his machine-gun crews fearlessly fought against enemy aircraft formations. Despite relentless enemy bombardment, his unit always continued its intensive fire at the enemy vultures. Fighting near the settlements 2nd Ponyri and Step-Butyrki (Kursk region) during the combat period 05-10 July 1943, the AA company under Jr.Lt. KUTS’ command provided protection for the observation and the command posts of the tank brigade and shot down 2 Ju-88, 1 Fw-210, and 2 Fw-190. In total, the company shot down 5 enemy aircrafts and damaged 1 aircraft during this battle.
For courage and bravery exhibited in the combat struggle against the German invaders, he deserves a state award order “RED BANNER”.

Citation for the Order of the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd class:

In the offensive combat operations during 15.04.1945 – 29.04.1945, Guards Captain KUTS provided effective protection against many attempted enemy air attacks at our brigade formations. His effort assisted the brigade in successful achievement of its combat objectives.
In the course of these battles, the company under Guards Cpt. KUTS’ command shot down 3 Fw-190 aircrafts.
In the combat engagements in the centre of Berlin city, apart from usual air defence task, his company also was successfuly fighting against ground enemy. His company fire would clear structures from the enemy (from cellars and houses), eliminating over 10 Faustpatrone crews and up to a platoon of enemy troops.
For excellently established air defence and personal courage in battle, Guards Cpt. KUTS deserves deserves a state award order “PATRIOTIC WAR I CLASS”.
