Description
Distinguished NKVD Employee Badge #4158 with Document
Awarded to Captain Vasily Vasilyevich Khramov (Василий Васильевич Храмов)
Made of brass, gilt and enamels. It measures 42.80 mm in height, 26.78 mm in width and weighs 17.5 gram without its screwplate. Its serial number ‘4158’ is one of the last numbers seen on a NKVD badge and can be found on its reverse.
In worn but average condition, with most details still visible and a fair amount of original gold plating remaining. The fragile red paint in the background, behind the hammer and sickle and the sword, shows typical wear. The enamel on the right side of the red banner has a chip but is otherwise intact and unrepaired. The rivets are original and secure, and the badge includes its original screwplate and full-length screw.
The accompanying document is a rare transitional piece from the brief period when the NKVD became the MVD. Both abbreviations appear: the cover shows the badge labeled NKVD along with the text underneath, while the interior displays “MVD” in large font. It also includes an original photo of Captain Khramov wearing his badge.
The booklet is in excellent condition with both parts securely attached to each other. It shows the matching badge number ‘4158’
Scarce, especially with its transitional document
On October 31st, 1940, by Resolution No. 2197, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR approved the provision and a sample of the sign “Honored Worker of the NKVD”. The regulations on the sign were announced by the order of the NKVD No. 1007 of November 6th, 1940. The sign was established for awarding the personnel of the bodies and troops of the NKVD of the USSR “for merits in the leadership or direct performance of work to protect the state security of the USSR.” The regulation on the sign “Honored Worker of the NKVD”also applied to those awarded earlier with the jubilee signs “Honorary Worker of the Cheka-GPU” of the V and XV anniversaries (the signs themselves remained with the awardees and were not replaced by a new sign).
