Description
Distinguished NKVD Employee Badge #4050 with Document
Awarded to Lt. Colonel David Fomich Bojgua (Давид Фомич Боджгуа)
This NKVD badge is made of brass, gilt and enamels. It measures 42.12 mm in height, 27.16 mm in width and weighs 16.9 gram without its screwplate. Its serial number ‘4050’ is one of the last numbers seen on a NKVD badge and can be found on its reverse.
In worn condition but with most details still visible. The enamels at the background, behind the hammer and sickle and the sword, show substantial loss and there is some damage on the top lefts side of the ribbon. The top right side of the ribbon shows an internal crack but no repairs. The rest of the enamels are problem free. At some point in time the back plate showing the serial number came off and was soldered back to the top part. Some of the traces of the soldering can be visible on its reverse. The badge comes with it original screwplate and its screw has not been shortened.
Its accompanying document is a rare transitional piece issued for a brief period right at the moment the NKVD was renamed MVD. It is interesting to see that the abbreviations MVD and NKVD were both used. The cover shows an image of the badge with NKVD as does the text. Inside the booklet a MVD stamp is visible as well as a printed text.
The booklet is in worn but decent condition with both parts still securely attached to each other. It shows the matching badge number ‘4050’

Rare, especially with its transitional document
On October 31st, 1940, by Resolution No. 2197, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR approved the provision and a sample of the sign “Honored Worker of the NKVD”. The regulations on the sign were announced by the order of the NKVD No. 1007 of November 6th, 1940. The sign was established for awarding the personnel of the bodies and troops of the NKVD of the USSR “for merits in the leadership or direct performance of work to protect the state security of the USSR.” The regulation on the sign “Honored Worker of the NKVD”also applied to those awarded earlier with the jubilee signs “Honorary Worker of the Cheka-GPU” of the V and XV anniversaries (the signs themselves remained with the awardees and were not replaced by a new sign).
