Medal for the Defense of Leningrad ‘Polished Sky’
Made of heavy gold plated brass. Measures 32.02 mm in width, 37.41 mm in height, including the eyelet and weighs 17.7 gram without its suspension.
This medal is in superb condition with perfect details and all gold plating still present on both the medal itself, the eyelet and even the connection ring. There are relatively few dings and scratches on either sides and even the higher laying parts show light wear only. The double layer suspension is time period to the medal and its connection ring has not been cut.
These heavy gold plated, ‘proof coinage’ medals with a polished sky were produced for high ranking military personnel and officials. Extra attention was given in the production and even the eyelet and connection ring were heavily plated. Only a handful were produced.
A rare piece in general but next to impossible to find with perfect gold plating, uncut connection ring and short horizon!
