Awarded to SMERSH Lt. Ivan Fedot(r)ovich Azarov (Иван Федот(р)ович Азаров)
Made of gold plated brass. Measures 32.19 mm in width, 37.57 mm in height including its eyelet and it weighs 17.1 gram without its suspension.
This medal is in decent condition with several dings and scratches on both sides. However, most details remain visible and a fair amount of gold plating still present. The brass suspension is time period to the medal.
Its accompanying document shows his name and rank, the date 14 September 1945 and document number Г 0218047. The document is signed by SMERSH Colonel Dmitry Vasilievich Cheremukhin and bears the red SERSH stamp of the 7th Guards Army.
СМЕРШ (‘SMERSH’) is a portmanteau of the Russian-language phrase Смерть шпионам (“Death to Spies”). Originally focused on combating German spies infiltrating the Soviet military, the organization quickly expanded its mandate: to find and eliminate any subversive elements.
