Description
Soviet Medal for the Defense of the Polar Region ‘Voenkomat’
Scarce sub-variation with a rim on its reverse
Made of gilded brass. Measures 32.21 mm in width, 36.99 mm in height including the eyelet and it weighs 16.0 gram without its suspension. Unlike the other two variations of this medal these ‘Voekomats’ have a Leningrad Mint mark ‘LMD’ stamped on the reverse of the eyelet.
The medal is in excellent, well above average condition with perfect details and light overall wear only. Almost all of the gold plating is still present and the aluminium suspension is time period to the medal.
These ‘Voenkomat’ medals are post-war issues that were awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran’s place of residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary but in most instances, the Voenkomat medals were “catch-up” awards to those who had taken part in the battle and then somehow overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years.
Stunning piece and the hardest to find of the Defence of the Polar variations!
The Medal “For the Defense of the Soviet Transarctic” was awarded to all participants in the defense of the Soviet Arctic region – soldiers of the Red Army, Navy and troops of the NKVD, as well as persons from the civilian population who took part in the defense of the North.
