Complete Group of a Soviet Order of the Red Star, two Bravery Medals and a Medal for Combat Merit
Awarded to Senior Sergeant Ivan Grigorievich Ryaboshtan (Иван Григорьевич Рябоштан)
For courage and bravery after being wounded 4 times, destroying 5 enemy machine-gun positions, killing 12 German soldiers and for almost 200 combat sorties as a Tu-2 aircraft weapon specialist
The group consists of the following items:
Order of the Red Star #2807688
Made of silver and enamels. Measures 48.36 mm in width, 46.35 mm in height and weighs 30.0 gram without its screwplate. The mint mark is located above, and the serial number underneath the screw post.
The order is in worn condition with strong wear on its center medaillion. The enamels however are problem free without repairs and small contact marks only. The screw has not been shortened and the order comes with a well fitted screwplate of a later type.
Medal for Bravery #277897
Made of solid silver. Measures 37.36 mm in width, 43.24 mm in height and weighs 26.5 gram.
The medal is in worn condition with strong wear on the higher laying parts like the tank. A fair amount of details however are still visible. Much of the red lacquer filling the letters have been repaired by something which appears to be clay(?).
Medal for Bravery #1831204
Made of solid silver. Measures 37.30 mm in width; 42.89 mm in height and weighs 28.3 gram.
The medal is in nice condition with medium wear on the higher laying parts like the tank. Most details are still visible and the medal is attached to the suspension bar with an original uncut connection ring.
Medal for Combat Merit #2227289
Made of solid silver. Measures 32.35 mm in diameter; 37.34 mm in height and weighs 18.5 gram.
The medal is in nice condition with medium wear on the higher laying parts like the sword and rifle. A fair amount of details however are still visible and the medal is attached to the suspension bar with an original uncut connection ring.
Not in the best condition but a complete group of numbered awards with a real combat appearance and with very interesting research to a true hero in the field!
Translation of the citation for the Order of the Red Star:
“He is the Patriotic war participant from the first days on the Southern, South-Western, North-Caucasus , Leningrad, 1 Baltic, 1 and 3 Belorussian fronts. His combat service began in the capacity of deputy platoon commander in an artillery unit. He participated in large battles for the town Chernovtsy, Pervomajsk, Nikolaev, Kakhovka, Mariupol, Stalino, Rostov, Valuyki, Kharkov, Millerovo. He defended the town Ordzhonikidze in the Caucasus area, Nalchik, Pyatigorsk, Esentuki, Cherkessk, Krasnodar, Toman-Temryuk. His war path covers all the way from the Romania-Moldavia border to the town Ordzhonikidze , and then he pushed all the way back fighting off the enemy. In this period, he sustained 3 light and 1 severe wounds, 1 contusion.
The 1st, light, wound was received on 07.06.1941 in the head without bone damage near town Chernovtsy while defending against an enemy attack across the river Prut. Despite the wound, he remain on the battlefield and kept punishing the enemy.
The 2nd, severe, wound was sustained on 06.12.1941. The enemy captured Rostov, but our forces prepared a counter strike and encircled the town closing the ring at Mius river liberating Rostov. In these fierce and long battles, he sustained a wound caused by fragments of an enemy aviation bomb. His left forearm bone and the right shoulder blade bone were damaged. At the same time he also sustained contusion, which impaired his normal speaking ability. He was hospitalised for two months and 24 days. After that, he returned to active duty and continued to punish the enemy.
The 3rd, light, wound was sustained on 22.07.1942 in the battle for town Kamensk on the North Donets river. Enemy bomb fragment damaged his right torso soft tissue. He was hospitalised for one month and two days.
The 4th, light, wound was inflicted in the battle for town Taman on 28.01.1943. He sustained fragmentation wound of the soft tissue of the left hip. He was hospitalised until 28 January 1944. After the recovery, due to his health condition, he was reassigned to a technical position in an Airforce unit. At present, he is an aviation weapon specialist. He is exceptionally responsible in his duties. The wounds are certified by the medical certificates issued by the hospitals №1568 and №4324 on 11.07.1942 and hospitals №4153 on 28.01.1944.
For exemplary conduct in defence of the Motherland and exhibited courage and bravery, for sustained wounds, he is recommend for a state award – order “RED STAR”.
Translation of the citation for the Medal for Bravery #277897:
“Mortar crew commander of 3 mortar company Guards Sr.Sgt. RYABOSHTAN Ivan Grigorievich is awarded for the engagement for control of the railway line near the Sovkhoz “PYATILETKA”, Krymskaya district, Krasnodar region on 29 April 1943. In this engagement he corrected the mortar fire and destroyed 2 enemy machine-gun positions with the crews.”
Translation of the citation for the Medal for Bravery #1831204:
“Mortar crew commander of 2 mortar company Guards Sr.Sgt. RYABOSHTAN Ivan Grigorievich is awarded for the engagement for the khuto “Krasnaya Strelka”, Staro-Titovka district, Krasnodar region on 01 October 1943. As part of his mortar crew, he destroyed 3 enemy machine-gun positions and 12 Hitler’s soldiers.”
Medal for Combat Merit #2227289:
He has been participating in the Patriotix war since 1941. First in the ground forces as an artillery commander. Then he was sent to our airforce reginment in February 1944. Working as a Tu-2 aircraft weapon specialist, he has serviced 198 combat sorties and also 96 training sorties during the training period. He a reliable and hardworking specialist. He works regardless of his personal time.
