Description
Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad variation 1
Numbered #29520 at the bottom of its reverse. Not often seen!
Made of brass. Measures 32.07 mm in width, 36.95 mm in height including its eyelet and weighs 16.1 grams without its suspension.Ā
In good condition with light wear to the raised areas and most details visible. Both sides show several dings and scratches and an even patina to the brass. Its connection ring has been cut and the double layer suspension is time period to the medal.
The medal is stamped with a large font numerals. There is no clear consensus on why or by whom this was done. Most researchers suggest the numbers were applied during the award process to correspond with issue documents, though the practice was never officially standardized and is only found on a limited number of medals.
In this particular case, the font style matches known period examples, and certain details indicate the stamping was carried out long ago. For that reason, we do not believe it was added by later forgers. However, no absolute guarantee can be given.
